Nkyinkyim is an art installation/monument at Nuhalenya – Ada which is made of a wall-like structure which bears relief sculptures as well as sculptures in- the -round (out- door theater) that tells stories of our Ghanaian/African ancestors. This project is to redefine African slavery through arts.
Nkyinkyim installation is an evolving art installation which is attempting to use sculptures to tell the story of African heritage. The project is spearheaded by Kwame Akoto-Bamfo and has been running for 6 years using sculpture as a medium.
Akoto-Bamfo drew inspiration for his Nkyinkyim installation from the Akan whose ‘nsodie’ funerary rite involves creating clay busts of fallen relatives and displayed in cemeteries as memorial.
Since the beginning of the project in 2010, there has been many installations sculpting of hundreds of faces to represent the men and women who fell victim to slavery.
The sculptures are dedicated to the African ancestral slaves that lost their lives through drowning in the lakes , rivers Atlantic Ocean etc.
